Split Leaf Philodendron

Don’t confuse the Split Leaf Philodendron (Swiss Cheese Plant) for a Monstera Deliciosa. While they are both in the Araceae family and have the same care requirements, they are not the same plant as they can’t cross-pollinate and make hybrids. The Swiss Cheese Plant has heart-shaped leaves and is easy to care for making it a popular tropical house plant.

Plant Size

Small: 4 inch standard nursery pot.

Medium: 5 – 6 inch standard nursery pot.

Light

Bright, indirect light is ideal. Too much direct sunlight can damage the leaves and too dim of light can stunt its growth and prevent the leaves from splitting.

Water

Consistent and even moisture is important for plant health. The roots should always be moist but not soaking. When the top soil feels dry it’s time to water. Water until you see it coming out the drain and wait until it stops dripping. If your pot has a tray and you see excess water in the tray, remove the water.

Plant Specific Care

Unlike most indoor plants, a split-leaf philodendron prefers to be in a large pot. These bigger pots promote larger leaves. Does well in rich soil that contains a good amount of peat moss. The soil needs to drain quickly to prevent root rot.

Pet-Friendly Plant

No.
